They also show a huge crater, later named the Caloris Basin.  The spacecraft circles the Sun, studying Mercury on three successive passes. This allows it to photograph some areas in both sunlight and darkness.  The Mariner 10 continues to circle the Sun to this day, its instruments dead and silent.
